The digital CrimsonCard is supported on the following Apple devices:
Apple iPhone: iPhone SE, iPhone 6s Plus or later, running the latest version of iOS.
Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 1 or later running the latest version of watchOS.
The digital CrimsonCard can be added to up to two Apple devices, including one iPhone and one Apple Watch, as long as both are signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID.
Never had a CrimsonCard? Patrons who have never had a CrimsonCard must upload a valid photo and documentation verifying their identity (ex., driver's license, state ID, passport) that meets IU’s requirements. Once approved, you can set your digital CrimsonCard. Step-by-step instructions are provided below.

Step-by-step: How to upload your CrimonsCard photo and identity verification:
Download, open, and log in to the latest version of the IU Mobile app from the Apple App Store.
Tap the digital CrimsonCard button, verify you are eligible for a digital CrimsonCard, and select the Start button.
Review the photo requirements and tap Select Photo.
Select the photo from your device that you would like to use as your CrimsonCard photo.
Select Edit below the photo to crop or adjust the photo.
When finished editing, select Done.
Check the box to confirm the photo meets the requirements.
Select Continue to begin the process of uploading your documentation to verify your identity.
Review the requirements for a valid ID photo, and tap Select Photo
Select the photo of your ID from your device.
Select Edit to crop or adjust the photo as needed, and select Done.
Check the box to confirm the photo meets the requirements.
Select Continue.
Review both photos and select Submit.
A notification will be sent to your university email informing you that your photos were either approved or denied.
If approved, proceed to step 2 to set up your digital CrimsonCard.
If denied, resubmit a photo and verification documentation that meets the requirements.
Instructions for Apple devices:
Open and log in to the latest version of the IU Mobile app.
Select the digital CrimsonCard button and verify that you are eligible to add your CrimsonCard to your wallet.
Select the Add to Apple Wallet button.
Your Wallet app will open. Follow the prompts and select the device for your digital CrimsonCard to be assigned.
Select that the information is correct and select Next in the top left.
Once your digital CrimsonCard is successfully added to your Wallet, IU Mobile will display it as Active in the green status box.
**If you have a physical CrimsonCard, it will stop working when you add your CrimsonCard to Apple Wallet. If you later need a new physical card, a $35 replacement fee will apply.**
Physical CrimsonCards are immediately and permanently disabled Once your digital CrimsonCard is added to your Apple Wallet, your physical card will stop working. A replacement fee of $35 will be incurred to obtain a new physical CrimsonCard.
Building access is available in 15 minutes Allow up to 15 minutes for your card to register in the building access system.
Elevator access can take up to 24 hours Depending on the timing, access to elevators may take up to 24 hours.
Printing is available in 15 minutes Your digital CrimsonCard will be active in the IU print system within 15 minutes.
Meal plan access is available immediately Once your CrimsonCard is added to your Apple Wallet, it can be used immediately to access your meal plan and dining dollars.

This video will show you how to upload a passport-style photo of yourself, along with a photo of a valid form of ID to verify your identity.
Before you get started, make sure you have two things saved on your phone:
A passport-style photo of yourself that meets the CrimsonCard requirements and
A photo of a valid ID—like a driver’s license, passport, or state ID.
Step 1: Open the IU Mobile app and tap the ‘Digital CrimsonCard’ button on the home screen.
Step 2: Verify that you're eligible for a digital CrimsonCard, and select the ‘Start’ button to begin.
Step 3: Review the photo requirements and tap ‘Select Photo’ to choose your CrimsonCard photo.
Step 4: Select the photo you'd like to use for your digital CrimsonCard.
Step 5: Select the ‘Edit’ link below the photo to crop or adjust the photo as needed.
Step 6: When finished editing, select ‘done’.
Step 7: Check the box to confirm the photo meets the requirements.
Step 8: Select ‘Continue’
Step 9: Now it’s time to upload a photo of your ID verifying your identity. To begin, review the requirements for a valid ID verification photo and tap ‘Select Photo’
Step 10: Select the photo of your ID from your phone.
Step 11: Tap ‘Edit’ to crop or adjust the photo as needed and select ‘Done’
Step 12: Check the box to confirm the photo meets the requirements.
Step 13: Select ‘Continue’ (Combine steps 12 and 13???)
Step 14: Review both photos and tap the ‘Submit’ button
A notification will be sent to your university email letting you know whether your photos were approved or not.
If both are approved, you’re all set to add your digital CrimsonCard to your device.
If one or both weren’t approved, the email will explain why, and you’ll be able to submit a new photo.

Step 1: After logging into the IU Mobile app, select the ‘Add to Wallet’ button to get started.
Step 2: Your device’s wallet app will open. Simply choose the correct device you’d like to add your digital CrimsonCard to.
Step 3: Select the ‘Next’ button located in the top right corner to confirm that you want to add your digital CrimsonCard to your device wallet.
Step 4: IU Mobile will display your digital CrimsonCard as active in the green status box. It can now be viewed and used directly from your device’s wallet.

Step 1: Open your digital CrimsonCard in the IU Mobile app and select the ‘Edit’ button located under your photo.
Step 2: Select the ‘Start’ button to begin.

Step 4: Select the photo you’d like to use for your digital CrimsonCard.
Step 5: Select ‘Edit’ to crop or adjust your photo as needed and acknowledge that the photo meets the requirements
Step 6: Select ‘Done’ when finished
Step 7: Check the box to acknowledge the photo meets the requirements.
Step 8: Select the ‘Continue’ button
Step 9: Click ‘Submit’ to send your photo for approval.
Step 10: A notification will be sent to your university email letting you know whether your photo was approved or not.
If approved, your digital CrimsonCard image will update immediately.
If it isn’t approved, the email will explain why, and you’ll be able to submit a new photo.

This video will show you how to remove your digital CrimsonCard from your device in three simple steps.
(Step 1) To begin, after logging into the IU Mobile app, select your digital CrimsonCard and tap the three dots in the upper-right corner of the green status bar.
(Step 2) Next, from the dropdown menu, select the "Unassign" option.
(Step 3) Lastly, tap the "Unassign" button again to confirm that you’d like to remove your digital CrimsonCard from your device.
Your digital CrimsonCard has now successfully been removed. To add it to a new device, open the IU Mobile app on that device and follow the steps to set up your digital CrimsonCard.
Using your digital CrimsonCard in Express Mode
The digital CrimsonCard features the “Express Mode” transaction experience. For digital CrimsonCard readers, a user can approach the reader with a dark screen on their iPhone or Apple Watch without needing to authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID.
If you don’t want to use Express Mode, you can turn it off by going to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Select the CrimsonCard > Untoggle the Express Mode button.
Apple: Digital CrimsonCard FAQs
You can use your digital CrimsonCard on up to two devices (one iPhone and one Apple Watch) that are signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID.
To add the IU Digital ID card to Apple Wallet, a device passcode must be enabled. Face ID, Touch ID, or Optic ID may also be used if available. These security features help verify transactions and protect access to information in the Wallet app.
No! The digital CrimsonCard is configured in Express Mode by default. In Express Mode, you can approach the reader with a dark screen on your iPhone or Apple Watch without needing to authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID.
If you don’t want to use Express Mode, you can turn it off by going to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Select the CrimsonCard > Untoggle the Express Mode button.
Apple Wallet currently supports student IDs only in the United States. If your Apple ID region is set outside the U.S., the option to add your CrimsonCard may not appear. For iPhone or Apple Watch users, we recommend setting your Apple ID region to the United States.
Yes—if you have an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or a more recent model, Express Mode with power reserve is supported.
This feature allows you to use your Digital CrimsonCard to access campus buildings or make payments for up to five hours after your iPhone battery runs out and needs to be charged.
Even if your phone appears dead, you can still tap to enter or pay—no passcode, Face ID, or charging required.
Yes! Your digital CrimsonCard can be used even if your iPhone or Apple Watch does not have a cellular signal, as the digital CrimsonCard is stored on your device.
If you are having any difficulty using your digital CrimsonCard to complete a transaction, contact the CrimsonCard office by calling (317) 274-0400, emailing crimsoncard@iu.edu, or submitting an Issue form online.
First remove your digital CrimsonCard from your old device in the Apple Wallet app by:
Open your digital CrimsonCard in the IU Mobile app.
Select the three dots in the upper-right corner of the green status box.
Select the Unassign option.
Select the Unassign button to confirm your action.
Your digital CrimsonCard has now been removed from your device.
Then, follow the steps below to add your digital CrimsonCard to your new device(s):
Open and log in to the IU Mobile app.
Select the black Digital CrimsonCard button.
Select the Add to Apple Wallet button.
Once your wallet app opens, choose the device to add the digital CrimsonCard to.
You can add your CrimsonCard to both an iPhone and Apple Watch by repeating this step.
Select Next to confirm you would like to add the card to your wallet.
IU Mobile will now display your card as active—it's now ready to be used!
If your Apple device is lost, stolen, or broken, follow these steps to disable or remove your digital CrimsonCard:
Click Find iPhone (or use the Find My app on another Apple device).
Select the lost/broken device from the list.
Put it in Lost Mode (this disables Apple Pay and Wallet).
Once the digital CrimsonCard is disabled from your Apple Wallet, you can add it to a new device through the IU Mobile app or visit the CrimsonCard office to get a physical CrimsonCard.
Note: Your first physical CrimsonCard is provided at no cost. Any replacement cards will incur a $35 replacement fee.
If your Apple device is lost follow these steps to disable or remove your digital CrimsonCard:
Find iPhone (or use the Find My app on another Apple device).
Select the lost/broken device from the list.
Put it in Lost Mode (this disables Apple Pay and Wallet).
If you find your Apple device, you must unlock your device and turn off Lost Mode using the following steps:
Power on the device, if it’s off.
On the lock screen, you’ll see a message that the device is in Lost Mode.
Enter your device passcode to unlock it. – This automatically disables Lost Mode and re-enables features like Wallet and Apple Pay (including your Digital CrimsonCard, if still active).
To remove the digital CrimsonCard from your Apple wallet:
Open your digital CrimsonCard in the IU Mobile app.
Select the three dots in the upper-right corner of the green status box.
Select the Unassign option.
Select the Unassign button to confirm your action.
Your digital CrimsonCard has now been removed from your device.
Your CrimsonCash balance appears in two places: on the CrimsonCard preview in your Apple Wallet list and within the card details when you tap into it.
CrimsonCard in your Apple Wallet:This is your active digital ID. It allows you to tap and access buildings, services, and make purchases—just like the physical CrimsonCard.
CrimsonCard in IU Mobile:This is for viewing your CrimsonCard information (e.g., balance, card details) and managing your card, but it does not function as a tap-to-use ID. It does display the CrimsonCard barcode which is used for certain services around campus.
